A1GP Taupo roundup
Jan 20 2008: New Zealand has (dust) stormed its way to the top of the A1GP championship after Jonny Reid thrilled the home crowd in Taupo with two superb drives.

*After a sensational team effort last season, taking second place overall in the 2006/2007 A1GP World Cup, I am only positive minded about the season to come. I have every confidence in the team situated around me and with the great results we achieved last season from pole positions to race wins and podiums, I really do think that A1 Team New Zealand has a fantastic shot at taking the title in 2007-08!"

Take a look around the site to catch up with his progress, starting with karting in New Zealand and moving on to the New Zealand Formula Ford circuit. From there, Reid has taken part in the Formula Holden series in Australia, the F3000 in Europe and the All Japan F3 series.

How good is Jonny? Well, the chief engineer for the New Zealand A1GP team, Chris Gorne, has been in motorsport for 20 years and boasts 41 career wins. What’s more, of the 34 races in A1GP’s short history, Gorne’s cars have won a staggering 15 of them.

Gorne says preparing race cars is “a team package”, but the driver-engineer relationship is vital and the engineer is only as good as the driver and his crew.

“With the New Zealand A1 team we have a great package,” he said. “Jonny Reid responds well to advice and his feedback on setting up the car is impressive. I’ve worked with a lot of good drivers and Jonny’s up the top…he’s just great to work with.”

The affable nature of this relaxed young Kiwi is noted time and again in media interviews. But once the flag drops he’s a different person…with a clear focus and a need for speed…extreme speed.

Music legend Chuck Berry sang about it, media headlines have trumpeted it and large homemade signs in Taupo displayed it – three little words that we hope to see and hear for many years to come:
